Why Annual Servicing Matters
A wood burner or multi-fuel stove is a precision heating appliance with internal components that degrade through normal use. Fire rope seals compress and harden over time, baffle plates can warp under sustained heat, and flue connections can develop leaks. Annual servicing catches these issues before they become expensive problems — or safety hazards.
Most stove manufacturers require annual servicing to maintain the warranty. A sweep and service by a HETAS-registered technician satisfies this requirement and provides documented proof that your appliance has been professionally maintained.
What We Inspect During a Service
Fire Rope Seals
The rope seal around the stove door is one of the most important components for efficient combustion. When the door is closed, this rope creates an airtight seal that ensures all air entering the firebox comes through the controllable air vents. A worn or compressed rope allows uncontrolled air to leak in, which disrupts the combustion cycle and reduces efficiency. We test the seal by closing the door on a strip of paper — if it slides out easily, the rope needs replacing.
Baffle Plate
The baffle plate sits above the fire, deflecting hot gases towards the secondary air supply before they exit through the flue. This is where secondary combustion occurs — the burning of volatile gases that would otherwise be wasted as smoke. Over time, the intense heat can cause the baffle to crack, warp, or corrode. A damaged baffle significantly reduces efficiency and increases flue gas temperatures, which can stress the chimney liner.
Fire Bricks and Grate
The fire bricks lining the interior of the firebox protect the steel body from direct flame contact. Cracked or missing bricks expose the stove body to excessive heat, shortening its lifespan. The grate (in multi-fuel stoves) must move freely to allow ash to fall through for air circulation.
Air Controls and Hinges
We check that all air controls slide freely and that the mechanisms are not seized or damaged. The door hinges and latch are inspected for wear — a poorly fitting door compromises the seal just as much as worn rope.
Flue Connection
The joint between the stove’s flue collar and the chimney liner or flue pipe is inspected for signs of leakage, corrosion, or deterioration of the fire cement seal. Even a small gap at this point can allow combustion gases — including carbon monoxide — to escape into the room.
When to Book
The best time to service your stove is in late summer or early autumn, before the burning season begins. This gives you time to order any replacement parts and ensures your stove is ready for the first cold snap. Our Customer Portal sends automated reminders so you never miss a service window.
The Chimney Sweep
A full chimney sweep is carried out alongside the stove service. Using professional rotary power sweeping equipment, we clear the full length of the chimney from the stove connection to the terminal. The sweep removes soot, creosote, and any debris (including bird nesting material) that may have accumulated since the last clean.
After sweeping, we perform a smoke draw test to confirm the flue is clear and drawing correctly. You receive a digital HETAS chimney sweep certificate, which is essential for insurance purposes and provides a permanent record of maintenance.
Professional servicing extends the life of your stove and keeps your home safe.
What We Provide After the Service
- A digital HETAS sweep certificate, emailed and stored in your Customer Portal
- A written report of the stove’s condition, noting any parts that need replacement
- Advice on fuel choice and burning practices to maximise efficiency
- An automated reminder for next year’s service, timed to your burning season
Book Your Annual Service
We offer chimney sweeping and stove servicing across South Lincolnshire. A combined sweep and service covers everything described in this guide — fire rope seals, baffle plates, air controls, flue inspection, and a full chimney sweep with a digital HETAS certificate.
Need to check the condition of your chimney stack or roof before winter? We also offer drone chimney and roof surveys — a fast, safe way to inspect hard-to-reach areas without scaffolding.
